Hart County, Georgia, USA

Hart County is located in northeastern Georgia along the South Carolina border, with Hartwell serving as its county seat and largest city. The county was created in 1853 from parts of Elbert and Franklin counties and named for Nancy Hart, a frontier settler remembered for her support of the Patriot cause during the American Revolution. It is the only one of Georgia’s 159 counties named for a woman. Lake Hartwell forms much of the county’s eastern boundary and supports recreation, tourism and waterfront development, while agriculture and manufacturing remain important to the local economy. The county had an estimated population of about 28,600 in 2025.
