Georgia is a state in the southeastern United States, bordered by Tennessee and North Carolina to the north, South Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Florida to the south, and Alabama to the west. Atlanta is the state capital and largest city, serving as the economic, transportation and cultural hub of the Southeast; other major cities include Augusta, Columbus, Macon, Savannah and Athens. Georgia’s geography ranges from the Blue Ridge Mountains in the northeast through the rolling Piedmont, where much of the state’s population resides, to the Coastal Plain that extends to the Atlantic shoreline. The state features barrier islands, salt marshes and estuaries along its coast, while major waterways include the Savannah, Chattahoochee, Flint, Ocmulgee, Oconee and Altamaha rivers. Georgia is divided into 159 counties—the second-highest number of any U.S. state—covers approximately 57,513 square miles of land and had 10,711,908 residents in the 2020 census. One of the original thirteen colonies, Georgia became the fourth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1788 and today is a leading center for logistics, agriculture, manufacturing, technology and film production.
