Clayton County lies immediately south of Atlanta in north-central Georgia, with Jonesboro serving as the county seat. Its incorporated communities include Forest Park, Jonesboro, Lake City, Lovejoy, Morrow and Riverdale, and part of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport occupies the county’s northern edge. The county forms part of metropolitan Atlanta’s Southern Crescent and is characterized by rolling Piedmont terrain around the upper Flint River watershed. The Census Bureau estimated its population at 297,471 in 2025, about 0.6% below the 2020 estimates base. Transportation, warehousing, aviation-related activity, health care, retail and manufacturing are important parts of the local economy.
