Greene County, Georgia, USA

Greene County is located in east-central Georgia, south of Athens and roughly midway between Atlanta and Augusta, with Greensboro serving as the county seat. The county covers about 406 square miles, including approximately 388 square miles of land, and lies across a landscape of rolling Piedmont terrain, forests, farms and reservoir shoreline. Its western portion is dominated by the Lake Oconee area, where residential and resort development has expanded around the lake, while the eastern and southern parts remain more rural and include communities such as Union Point, White Plains, Woodville and Siloam. Interstate 20 crosses the county and provides its principal regional transportation connection. Greene County was created in 1786 from part of Washington County and named for Revolutionary War General Nathanael Greene; it had 18,915 residents in the 2020 census, with the Census Bureau estimating 21,367 residents in 2025.
