Newton County is located in north-central Georgia along Interstate 20, about 35 miles east of Atlanta. Covington is the county seat, and the county also includes Mansfield, Newborn, Oxford, Porterdale and part of Social Circle. Newton County had an estimated population of 124,010 in 2024, up from about 112,500 at the start of the decade. The area combines fast-growing suburban communities with rural land, historic town centers and campuses operated by Emory University, Georgia State University and Georgia Piedmont Technical College. Manufacturing, logistics, education, health care, film production and local government contribute to its economy.
