Covington is the county seat of Newton County, located along Interstate 20 about 35 miles east of Atlanta. Incorporated in 1822, the city is centered on a historic courthouse square surrounded by shops, restaurants and civic buildings. Covington had an estimated population of 15,302 in 2024. Its preserved streets and architecture have made it a major film and television location known as the Hollywood of the South. Film production, manufacturing, health care, education, retail and county government are important parts of the local economy.
