Liberty County lies on Georgia’s Atlantic coastal plain between Savannah and Brunswick. Hinesville is the county seat and largest city, while Midway, Riceboro, Flemington and rural communities extend toward tidal rivers, salt marshes and the barrier-island coast. Fort Stewart occupies a large part of the county and has strongly influenced its population and economy. Liberty County was created in 1777 and named for the American independence movement during the Revolutionary era. Military activity, port connections, forestry, manufacturing, agriculture and heritage tourism shape the area today.
