Columbus is a consolidated city-county in western Georgia, located along the Chattahoochee River opposite Phenix City, Alabama. The city was established by the Georgia legislature in 1828 as a planned trading center and was named for Christopher Columbus. Columbus and Muscogee County consolidated their governments in 1971, leaving them with a single administration and nearly identical boundaries. The community is a regional center for manufacturing, health care, education and military-related activity and borders Fort Benning, formerly known as Fort Moore. Columbus had an estimated population of 202,171 in 2025.
