Muscogee County occupies west-central Georgia along the Alabama border and is geographically dominated by the consolidated city of Columbus. The Chattahoochee River forms its western edge, while Georgia’s fall line marks the transition from Piedmont terrain to the Coastal Plain and helped shape the area’s early industrial development. Columbus is the county’s principal city and the center of a metropolitan area extending into eastern Alabama. Muscogee County had an estimated population of 202,171 in 2025, about 2.3% below the 2020 estimates base. Its economy includes military activity associated with nearby Fort Benning, manufacturing, financial services, health care, education, logistics and tourism.
