Allegany County, Maryland, USA

Allegany County is located in western Maryland, forming part of the Appalachian Highlands along the state’s border with West Virginia and near Pennsylvania. The county is bordered by Garrett County to the west, Washington County to the east, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, to the north, and Mineral and Hampshire counties, West Virginia, to the south. Cumberland, the county seat and largest city, developed at the junction of Wills Creek and the North Branch Potomac River and serves as the principal urban center of the region. The county’s rugged terrain is defined by parallel Appalachian ridges and valleys, including Evitts Mountain, Wills Mountain, Savage Mountain and Green Ridge, with the Potomac River forming much of its southern boundary. Interstate 68, U.S. Route 40 and the historic Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park traverse the county, reflecting its long-standing importance in transportation, manufacturing and outdoor recreation. Allegany County covers approximately 424 square miles of land and had 68,106 residents at the 2020 census.
