Knox County is located on Maine’s midcoast, occupying a rugged peninsula and island region along Penobscot Bay and the Gulf of Maine. It is bordered by Waldo County to the north, Lincoln County to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the south and east. The county seat is Rockland, while other notable communities include Camden, Rockport, Thomaston, Owls Head, St. George, Warren and Union. The county also includes several island communities, including Vinalhaven, North Haven and Matinicus. Its geography is defined by granite headlands, protected harbors, tidal rivers and numerous offshore islands, making it one of Maine’s most distinctive maritime regions. U.S. Route 1 serves as the county’s primary transportation corridor, connecting its coastal communities with the rest of the state. Historically known for granite quarrying and shipbuilding, Knox County’s economy today is driven by tourism, commercial fishing and lobstering, marine services, healthcare, arts and culture, higher education and small manufacturing. The county encompasses approximately 365 square miles of land and had 40,607 residents at the 2020 census.
