Location overview

Adams County occupies the southwestern corner of Mississippi along the Mississippi River and the Louisiana border. Natchez is the county seat and principal community, standing on high bluffs above a landscape of forests, farms, wetlands and smaller rural settlements. Established in 1799, Adams County is among the oldest counties in Mississippi and predates statehood. Its history is closely tied to Indigenous nations, European colonization, plantation agriculture, river commerce and the experiences of enslaved and free Black communities. Tourism, forestry, agriculture, manufacturing and river-related trade contribute to the modern economy.
