Natchez, Adams County, Mississippi, USA
Municipality
Location overview
Natchez is a city on high bluffs above the Mississippi River in southwestern Mississippi and serves as the seat of Adams County. Founded by the French in 1716 near the homeland of the Natchez people, it is one of the oldest European-established communities on the lower Mississippi. The city became a major river port and cotton-trading center, a history reflected in its architecture as well as in sites documenting slavery and Black life. A compact downtown, river views and surrounding woodlands give Natchez a distinctive setting. Tourism, health care, manufacturing, forestry and regional commerce support the city today.
