Mecklenburg County lies in south-central North Carolina along the South Carolina border, with Charlotte as its county seat and largest city. The county occupies rolling Piedmont terrain shaped by the Catawba River and the reservoirs of Lake Norman, Mountain Island Lake and Lake Wylie. Formed in 1762, it grew from a farming and trading region into the urban center of the Charlotte metropolitan area. Mecklenburg County had about 1.2 million residents in 2025.
