Location overview

Lancaster County lies in southeastern Nebraska in the Salt Creek Basin. Lincoln, the state capital, is its county seat. Salt deposits attracted early settlers to the basin and prompted attempts at commercial production. Territorial lawmakers established the county in 1855, and Lincoln was formally designated its seat in 1869. The arrival of railroads and the development of the state capital helped shape the county’s growth.
