Nebraska is a Great Plains state stretching west from the Missouri River to the high plains below the Rocky Mountains, with Lincoln as its capital and Omaha as its largest city. The Platte River crosses the state through broad agricultural valleys, while the central Sandhills form one of North America’s largest grass-stabilized dune regions. Nebraska entered the Union in 1867 after railroads, emigrant trails and homesteading reshaped lands long inhabited by Indigenous nations. The state had about 2 million residents in 2025. Agriculture and food processing remain central to its economy, joined by transportation, manufacturing, financial services, health care, technology and tourism.
