Kearney, Buffalo County, Nebraska, USA

Kearney is the county seat of Buffalo County in south-central Nebraska, near the Platte River and Interstate 80 roughly midway across the country. The city was platted as Kearney Junction in 1871 where two railroad lines met, and its name ultimately came from nearby Fort Kearny, with an added “e” that became permanent. A late-19th-century boom gave way to a sharp contraction before the opening of a state college in 1904 helped establish a steadier regional role; that institution is now the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Kearney had about 34,800 residents in 2025. Higher education, health care, manufacturing, agriculture, retail and travel-related businesses shape the modern city.
