Location overview
Coryell County lies in central Texas, with Gatesville as its county seat and Copperas Cove as its largest community. Its landscape of limestone plateaus and grasslands is crossed by the Leon River and Cowhouse Creek near the eastern edge of the Hill Country. The county was created in 1854 and named for James Coryell, an early Texas Ranger and explorer, while nearby Fort Gates helped draw settlers to the area. Coryell County had about 85,600 residents in 2025. Fort Cavazos has strongly influenced its modern growth, alongside ranching, agriculture, manufacturing, retail and regional services.
