Gatesville, Coryell County, Texas, USA

Gatesville is a city in central Texas and the county seat of Coryell County, located about 40 miles west of Waco. The community was established in 1854, shortly after Coryell County was created, and was named for nearby Fort Gates, a U.S. Army post established on the Texas frontier in 1849. Gatesville developed as a regional center for ranching, agriculture, government and trade and later became closely associated with the state correctional system, which operates several facilities in the area. The city lies along the Leon River near the eastern edge of the Texas Hill Country and serves as a commercial center for surrounding rural communities. Gatesville had 16,135 residents in the 2020 census.
