Location overview

Henrico County wraps around the north, east and west sides of Richmond in central Virginia, extending from the Piedmont toward the tidal plain of the James River. Its communities include Short Pump, Tuckahoe, Lakeside, Highland Springs, Sandston and Varina, with landscapes ranging from established suburbs to river lowlands and rural edges. Henrico began in 1611 as one of Virginia’s earliest English settlements and became one of the colony’s original eight shires in 1634. The county had about 342,800 residents in 2025. Health care, finance, technology, logistics, retail, education and manufacturing are prominent in its modern economy.
