Harrison County lies in north-central West Virginia among the hills and river valleys of the Appalachian Plateau. Clarksburg is the county seat, while Bridgeport, Shinnston, Salem and smaller communities form a regional network along major highways and waterways. The West Fork River and its tributaries cross a landscape shaped by forests, farms, mining and later suburban development. Harrison County was formed in 1784 from part of Monongalia County, before West Virginia became a state. Energy, manufacturing, health care, aviation, education and regional commerce contribute to its economy.
