Childersburg is a city on the Coosa River in southern Talladega County, where Alabama’s Appalachian foothills meet the river valley. Lay Lake, wooded hills and nearby caverns make the area a gateway to boating, fishing and underground scenery. The site has deep Indigenous history as the location of the Muscogee town of Coosa, visited by the Hernando de Soto expedition in 1540, while the modern community later grew with rail and industry. Childersburg counted 4,754 residents in the 2020 census. Manufacturing, utilities, retail and recreation support a city linked by highway to Birmingham, Sylacauga and Talladega.
