Prattville is a city primarily in Autauga County, Alabama, with a smaller portion extending into neighboring Elmore County, and serves as the Autauga County seat. It lies in south-central Alabama along Autauga Creek, immediately northwest of Montgomery and near the Alabama River, placing it within the Montgomery metropolitan area. Interstate 65 runs along the city’s eastern side and provides direct connections to Montgomery and Birmingham, while U.S. Route 31 and state highways link Prattville with surrounding communities. The city was founded in the 1830s by industrialist Daniel Pratt around a water-powered cotton-gin manufacturing complex, and its historic mill district, creekside setting and artesian wells contributed to its nickname, “The Fountain City.” Prattville has since developed into a suburban, commercial and manufacturing center while retaining a historic downtown core. It had 37,781 residents at the 2020 census and covers about 35.7 square miles of land.
