Gunnison
Municipality
Location overview

Gunnison is a city and county seat in central-western Colorado’s Gunnison Valley. Incorporated in 1880, it grew as a supply, smelting and railroad center for the surrounding mining region. Rail connections in the early 1880s supported both mining and ranching. Ranching remained important as the region’s early mineral boom receded. Higher education became part of the community when the Colorado State Normal School opened in 1911.
