Ashby is a rural town in northern Middlesex County, Massachusetts, along the New Hampshire border. Forests, farms, ponds and low-density neighborhoods surround a small historic center near the western edge of the greater Boston region. The town was incorporated in 1767 after developing from colonial settlement in the surrounding frontier. Its meetinghouse tradition, open land and preserved buildings retain the character of a New England village. Residents also look to Fitchburg, Nashua and other nearby centers for employment, shopping and regional services.
