Location overview
Jefferson City is the capital of Missouri and the county seat of Cole County, set on bluffs overlooking the Missouri River. The domed Missouri State Capitol anchors a compact historic center, while residential neighborhoods and commercial districts spread into the surrounding hills. The city was selected for the capital in 1821 and named for Thomas Jefferson as Missouri entered the Union. Its river and rail connections helped it grow beyond its original political purpose.
