Bowman is a city in Bowman County, North Dakota, located in the far southwestern corner of the state approximately 12 miles east of the Montana border and 35 miles north of the South Dakota border. It serves as the county seat and principal commercial center for a largely rural region of the northern Great Plains characterized by rolling prairie, badlands, ranchland and dryland agriculture. U.S. Highways 12 and 85 intersect in Bowman, making it an important regional transportation hub connecting western North Dakota with eastern Montana and the Black Hills region. The city lies within the upper Little Missouri River basin near the edge of the Bakken petroleum-producing region, supporting an economy based on agriculture, energy, healthcare and regional services. Covering approximately 2 square miles, Bowman had a population of 1,537 at the 2020 census.
