Cape May is a small city at the southern end of the Cape May Peninsula, where Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. One of the nation’s oldest seaside resorts, it began attracting vacationers in the 18th century and was incorporated as a city in 1851. Much of Cape May is protected as a National Historic Landmark district because of its exceptional concentration of Victorian houses, hotels and commercial buildings. The city had 2,768 residents in the 2020 census, although summer visitors greatly increase its seasonal population. Beaches, lodging, restaurants, historic tourism, birdwatching and the working harbor define its economy and cultural life.
