New Jersey is a Mid-Atlantic state between New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and the Atlantic Ocean, with Trenton as its capital and Newark as its largest city. Its compact landscape ranges from the ridges and lakes of the northwest through the Piedmont’s dense cities and suburbs to the Pine Barrens and barrier-island shore. The region was part of the Lenape homeland before European colonization, and New Jersey became one of the original 13 states after playing a central role in the American Revolution. The state had about 9.5 million residents in 2025, making it the nation’s most densely populated state. Pharmaceuticals, finance, logistics, technology, manufacturing, agriculture and tourism all benefit from its position between the New York and Philadelphia metropolitan areas.
