Location overview

Scotch Plains is a township in western Union County, New Jersey, near the Watchung Reservation. European settlement began in the late 17th century, and the community developed as a stagecoach stop between New York and Philadelphia. Incorporated as Fanwood Township in 1878, it took the Scotch Plains name in 1917. Housing growth after World War II transformed much of its farmland into suburban neighborhoods. The historic Shady Rest clubhouse reflects the community’s role in African American golf and social history.
