Hoboken is a city in Hudson County, New Jersey, on the west bank of the Hudson River across from Manhattan. Its waterfront developed as a center of shipping during the 19th century. Incorporated as a city in 1855, Hoboken grew rapidly as docks, industry and immigrant communities expanded. The city has a compact urban street grid and historic residential and commercial buildings.
