Location overview

Paterson is the seat of Passaic County in northeastern New Jersey. Founded in 1792 beside the Great Falls of the Passaic River, it was planned as a center for American manufacturing. Canals carried waterpower from the falls to mills that produced textiles, locomotives and other goods. Its silk industry earned Paterson the nickname Silk City, while the Great Falls and surviving industrial buildings remain defining features of the urban landscape.
