Location overview
Reno is a city in western Nevada and the seat of Washoe County. It lies along the Truckee River in the Truckee Meadows, near the Sierra Nevada and the California border. The Washoe and Paiute peoples inhabited the area before Euro-American settlement. The town was laid out in 1868 after Myron Lake offered land for a Central Pacific Railroad depot at an established river crossing. Railroad connections to the Comstock mining region, surrounding ranches and farms, and later tourism and gaming helped shape its economy.
