Location overview

Lancaster is a city southeast of Columbus, Ohio, and the seat of Fairfield County. Founded in 1800 near the Hocking River, it developed along Zane’s Trace, an early route across Ohio. Canal and railroad connections later linked its commerce to a wider region. Local natural gas and silica sand supported a glassmaking industry that became part of the city’s identity. Its older downtown and residential streets preserve layers of the settlement, transportation and industrial history of central Ohio.
