Upper Darby is a densely settled township immediately west of Philadelphia in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Its many neighborhoods and business districts are linked to the city by trolley, subway and bus lines, creating an urban character within a township of less than 8 square miles. Established in 1786, Upper Darby developed from farms and mills into a streetcar suburb, while sites tied to the Underground Railroad preserve part of its 19th-century history. The township had about 85,500 residents in 2025 and is one of the most culturally diverse communities in the region. Retail, health care, education, small businesses, entertainment and commuting to employment centers across metropolitan Philadelphia shape its economy.
