Delaware County is a densely developed county in southeastern Pennsylvania, immediately southwest of Philadelphia and bordered by the Delaware River and the state of Delaware to the south, Chester County to the west, Montgomery County to the north and Philadelphia County to the northeast. Media is the county seat, while its largest population centers include Upper Darby Township, Chester, Haverford Township and Radnor Township. The county covers about 184 square miles of land and contains 49 municipalities, ranging from older industrial and riverfront communities along the Delaware to tightly built inner-ring suburbs, historic boroughs and more spacious residential areas toward the western edge. Major transportation routes include Interstate 95, Interstate 476, U.S. Route 1 and several SEPTA rail and trolley lines, reflecting the county’s close economic and social integration with metropolitan Philadelphia. Delaware County was created in 1789 from part of Chester County and had 576,830 residents in the 2020 census.
