Pawtucket is a city in Providence County, Rhode Island, on the Blackstone River at the Massachusetts border. It forms part of the Providence metropolitan area and contains compact neighborhoods, former mill districts, parks and a traditional downtown. Samuel Slater’s water-powered cotton mill began operating here in the 1790s and became a landmark of the American Industrial Revolution. Textiles and other manufacturing drove the city’s growth through the 19th and early 20th centuries. Arts organizations, small manufacturers, health care, retail and regional employment now share the economic landscape with its industrial heritage.
