Rhode Island, USA
State or territory
Location overview
Rhode Island is a New England state bordered by Massachusetts, Connecticut and the Atlantic Ocean. Providence is the capital and largest city, while Narragansett Bay divides much of the state into a mainland, islands and long coastal peninsulas. Rhode Island is the smallest state by area, but its shoreline, compact cities and historic mill towns create considerable geographic variety. Founded around principles of religious liberty, it was the last of the original 13 states to ratify the United States Constitution in 1790. Education, health care, manufacturing, marine industries, design and tourism are important parts of its economy.
