Anderson is the county seat and principal city of Anderson County, located on South Carolina’s Piedmont Plateau near the Interstate 85 corridor between Atlanta and Charlotte. Founded in 1826, it became known as the Electric City for its early adoption of hydroelectric power. Anderson had an estimated population of 30,937 in 2024. The city operates regional water, wastewater and transit services and serves as a commercial and health-care center for the surrounding county. Manufacturing, health care, education, retail and professional services form the core of its modern economy.
