Dallas is the third-most populous city in Texas and the principal city of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area in north-central Texas. It serves as the county seat of Dallas County, although portions of the city extend into Collin, Denton, Kaufman and Rockwall counties. Dallas is situated along the Trinity River and is bordered by numerous suburban communities including Irving, Garland, Mesquite, Richardson and Grand Prairie. Founded as a trading post in 1841 and incorporated in 1856, the city grew rapidly through the arrival of the railroads, the Texas oil boom and the expansion of banking, telecommunications and technology industries. Today, Dallas is a leading center for finance, corporate headquarters, healthcare, defense, logistics, information technology and transportation, anchored by Dallas Love Field, nearby Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and one of the nation’s largest inland transportation networks. The city is also recognized for its arts district, professional sports franchises and cultural institutions. Dallas encompasses approximately 339 square miles of land and had 1,304,379 residents at the 2020 census, making it the ninth-most populous city in the United States.
