Dallas County is a county in north-central Texas on the eastern side of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Dallas is the county seat, and its network of neighboring communities forms a largely continuous urban landscape. The Trinity River and its branches shape the county’s river corridors, where prairie and a limestone escarpment meet. The Texas Legislature created the county on March 30, 1846, and the existing settlement of Dallas became its temporary seat. Railroads, interurban lines and highways helped transform the county’s agricultural settlements into a predominantly urban center during the late 19th and 20th centuries.
