Dallas County is located in north-central Texas and forms the historic and governmental core of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area, one of the largest metropolitan regions in the United States. It is bordered by Denton and Collin counties to the north, Rockwall and Kaufman counties to the east, Ellis County to the south, Tarrant County to the west and Johnson County to the southwest. The county seat is Dallas, which is also the county’s largest city and principal economic center. Other major municipalities include Irving, Garland, Mesquite, Richardson (partly), Grand Prairie (partly), Carrollton (partly), Duncanville, DeSoto, Lancaster, Cedar Hill and Farmers Branch. The Trinity River flows through the county from northwest to southeast, while an extensive interstate highway network—including Interstates 20, 30, 35E, 45 and 635—supports one of the nation’s busiest transportation and logistics hubs. Dallas County’s economy is driven by finance, technology, healthcare, telecommunications, transportation, manufacturing, education and professional services, with numerous Fortune 500 headquarters and major medical and research institutions located throughout the county. Dallas County encompasses approximately 873 square miles of land and had 2,613,539 residents at the 2020 census, making it the second-most populous county in Texas after Harris County and among the most populous counties in the United States.
