Location overview
El Paso is a city on the Rio Grande in far western Texas, across the international border from Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. The Franklin Mountains rise within the city and overlook the historic Paso del Norte river crossing. Downtown was platted in 1859, and the arrival of railroads in 1881 accelerated the community’s growth. El Paso developed into an industrial, commercial and transportation center at the border. Franklin Mountains State Park preserves a large tract of mountain wilderness within the city limits.
