Location overview
Provo lies between Utah Lake and the Wasatch Range in north-central Utah, about 45 miles south of Salt Lake City. The Provo River crosses the city on its way to the lake, while nearby Provo Canyon and Mount Timpanogos frame its mountain setting. Settlers established Fort Utah in 1849, and the community later became home to Brigham Young Academy, the predecessor of Brigham Young University. Provo had about 114,500 residents in 2025. The university anchors the city alongside technology, health care, manufacturing, arts and access to year-round outdoor recreation.
