Jackson County
Organization overview

Jackson County is a local government in Missouri serving a county that includes most of Kansas City and surrounding communities. Its administrative departments handle property assessment, tax collection and the recording of deeds and other public documents for residents and businesses. Voters adopted a home rule charter in 1970 that separates executive and legislative responsibilities. An elected county executive serves as chief administrative officer and appoints most department directors, while a nine-member legislature enacts ordinances and resolutions. Six legislators represent local districts and three represent larger at-large districts; the legislature also appoints the county clerk and auditor.
