Kansas City is the largest city in Missouri and the principal city of the Kansas City metropolitan area, situated where the Kansas River joins the Missouri River near the Missouri–Kansas state line. Although its historic core, downtown and City Hall are in Jackson County, the municipal boundary also extends into Clay, Platte and a small part of Cass counties, so Kansas City should not be treated as wholly within Jackson County. The city’s terrain includes river bottoms, limestone bluffs and rolling uplands, with numerous boulevards, parks and fountains shaping its urban landscape. Interstates 29, 35, 49 and 70 converge in the area, while Kansas City International Airport and extensive freight-rail infrastructure reinforce its role as a major national transportation and distribution center. Its economy includes healthcare, finance, engineering, telecommunications, manufacturing, logistics, government and professional services. Kansas City had 508,090 residents at the 2020 census and covers approximately 314.7 square miles of land.
