Cyberattack Disrupts Box Elder County Government in Utah

The FBI and a Utah state cyber-crimes task force are investigating a cybersecurity breach that disrupted government operations in Box Elder County, with the attack centered at county offices in Brigham City, Utah. According to reporting by KUTV, the breach rendered some government computers unusable and triggered a formal criminal investigation. In a statement released Wednesday, August 6, Box Elder County confirmed it had “recently experienced a cybersecurity incident” and had launched both internal remediation efforts and a broader investigation to determine the scope and nature of the attack.

So far, the county has not disclosed when the incident began, what systems were affected, or whether sensitive data was accessed or stolen. Officials also declined to confirm whether the breach involved ransomware or other forms of targeted intrusion. According to KUTV, multiple residents were unaware of the incident until contacted by the press and expressed concern about the lack of earlier public notification. County spokesperson Lynette Crockett declined interview requests, citing the ongoing investigation. The county warned that some public services may experience temporary delays and urged residents to call 435-734-3300 for assistance.

Box Elder County’s official website displays a Cloudflare error on August 7, 2025, indicating an invalid SSL certificate and ongoing host server issues following the reported cyberattack.

As of Thursday morning, Box Elder County’s official website, boxeldercounty.org, is also inaccessible. A Cloudflare error page displays an “Invalid SSL certificate” message (Error 526), indicating that while internet traffic is reaching Cloudflare’s network, the origin server is unable to provide a valid certificate for a secure connection. This outage suggests that website infrastructure may be affected by the same incident, further disrupting digital access to county services.
