Ransomware Attack Hits City of Durant in Oklahoma, Disrupts Services

The City of Durant in southeastern Oklahoma—a city of about 19,000 residents and the county seat of Bryan County—was targeted by a ransomware attack on Sunday, June 1, 2025, disrupting several municipal services. City officials reported computer network outages early that morning, prompting an immediate response involving local law enforcement, the FBI, and the Secret Service. Affected systems include billing operations, digital payments, and some administrative tools. While officials have confirmed service interruptions, there is no evidence yet of compromised personal data. Residents are being advised to pay utility bills in person during the investigation.

According to Durant Police Sgt. Nick Spencer, cybersecurity experts are assisting in containment efforts, and the city has not received any ransom demands so far. The attack adds to a growing list of cybersecurity incidents across Oklahoma in 2025, including a ransomware assault on Bartlesville Public Schools that halted state testing, a second attack on Braum’s Ice Cream and Dairy Stores in Oklahoma City, and an ongoing investigation into a network breach at the University of Oklahoma. These incidents reflect a rising trend in targeted attacks on public institutions and critical infrastructure, underscoring the urgent need for statewide cybersecurity resilience.
