Salt Lake County is located in north-central Utah and contains most of the Salt Lake Valley, the state’s principal population and economic center. It is bordered by Davis County to the north, Morgan and Summit counties to the northeast and east, Wasatch County to the southeast, Utah County to the south and Tooele County to the west. Salt Lake City is the county seat and largest city, while other major communities include West Valley City, West Jordan, Sandy, South Jordan, Draper, Murray and Taylorsville. The Wasatch Mountains rise sharply along the county’s eastern edge, the Oquirrh Mountains border the western valley and the Great Salt Lake lies to the northwest; the Jordan River flows northward through the valley toward the lake. Interstate 15 is the principal north-south corridor, while Interstates 80 and 215 provide regional connections. Salt Lake County covers 742.07 square miles of land and had 1,185,238 residents at the 2020 census, making it Utah’s most populous county.
