Location overview

Gilmer County is a mountain county in northwest Georgia, with Ellijay as its county seat and East Ellijay as its other incorporated city. It was formed from Cherokee County in December 1832 and named for former Georgia Gov. George R. Gilmer. Parts of the Chattahoochee National Forest and Carters Lake are among its principal landscape features. Agriculture shifted from early cotton production toward apples, which became both a commercial crop and a draw for visitors. Georgia Highway 515, completed in 1991, improved access to the county from metropolitan Atlanta.
