Location overview

Ellijay is the seat of Gilmer County in north Georgia, about 75 miles north of Atlanta. It lies where the Ellijay and Cartecay rivers join to form the Coosawattee River. The city became the county seat in 1834, developing on the site of a Cherokee trading community. Railroad service arrived in 1884 and helped expand the timber industry. Apple growing in the surrounding valleys and access to nearby mountain recreation areas have contributed to the city’s role as a visitor destination.
